Bisla Marial Arts: It is all in the Family

BEST OF THE BEST IN SURREY

From its earliest origins, a martial arts club has been a place where young men and women have come to find their way. In this day and age, with the public school system in a sorry state, schools like Bisla Martial Arts are one of the few places where our youth and young adults can find strong role models, attention and support from their teachers. Schools like Bisla Martial Arts become one of the few places left where we can go to educate both our minds and our bodies, and to truly enjoy it.

Bisla began his career in Martial Arts when he first came to Canada as a young teenager. Though he is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do under Grand Master Jong Kim, Bisla’s love for Martial Arts extends across a variety of disciplines. He competed in a variety of tournaments in the area, training in multiple disciplines, such as Combat Jiu-Jitsu, MMA before turning professional as a boxer in 2009.

“Growing up I wanted to learn it all!” Be it, kickboxing, boxing, jiu jitsu, MMA…everything! I found it hard to find one gym that offered training in all of these disciplines. Being a teenager it was difficult to get from one gym to the other. That’s one of the main reasons I thought of opening a gym where we could establish a rapport with the kids and offer them a chance to sample different classes as a beginner and gain confidence in all disciplines of martial arts.”

“With lots of support from friends and family our grand opening was in November 2008 and I’m pleased to say that we have gained lots of praise throughout the community. We moved to our new location this summer and now we can easily accommodate our scheduled classes and have plenty of room to do personal training at the same time. We also have an area for vitamins and supplements available for purchase for our students and walk-ins, and a snack bar where we serve various types of protein shakes and healthy snacks.”

“Nowadays things are different from when I was a teen, kids are resorting to drugs and violence. Being at the gym, kids tend to stay focused and motivated to be their absolute best, physically and mentally.”

“All of the instructors at BMA are here for the kids and want to encourage the kids to meet their goals and gain self esteem and confidence in and out of the gym.”

Bisla Martial Arts proudly boasts some of the best coaches in the Lower Mainland in virtually every Martial Art, at every level. Local Heavyweight Adam Santos, a Brazilian sensei with a black belt in Morganti Ju-Jitsu, with a heart of gold teaches the “Ju-Jikids” classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while Aegis Athletic’s and UFC Veteran Kaleb Starnes brings his vast experience to the adult MMA classes. The venerable Jerry Veerasamy, who has trained and cornered some of the best boxers in British Columbia, teaches the sweet science. Inderjit Bisla, as the Chief Instructor, can be found teaching kickboxing, tae kwon do and various fitness classes throughout the week.

In just a few short years, Bisla Martial Arts has become one of the prime training grounds for talent. Hardeep Saran holds two belts, one in Muay Thai as the Super Middleweight Champion, and ComSport’s Light Heavyweight Championship in Boxing. Fighters like Ronnie Gill, Sunny Sandhu, Palvir Atwall, Sim Brar and Aman Aujla are frequently found on fight cards throughout the city.
