F.I.L.E.S. Interview with CHRISTOPHER BOYKO

WHAT GYM DO YOU TRAIN OUT OF?

I train primarily out of the BC LION training facility for the team! And spend a lot of time outside on football, soccer and field hockey fields across the lower mainland.
When I’m getting ready to fight I train at KAI SING THONG MUAY THAI gym with an elite fighting team under MASTER SONG.
I also enjoy training my personal training clients at STEVE NASH LANGLEY.

DO YOU HAVE ANY NICKNAMES?

CHRISTOPHER BOYKO-  ( THE SHREDDER) (BODY BY BOYKO) (B.A.D)
THE SHREDDER- was a nickname givin’ to me by training partners in body building and fighting and I think it is based on how I keep my condition at all times (shredded) and from the character on ninja turtles master shredder.
BODY BY BOYKO- u may hear that from my athletes or clients who have or want a Body By Boyko.
B.A.D- stands for Boyko Athletic Development which is a system that my wife and I run successfully.

COMPETITION HISTORY?

Well I have done a lot of competing personally and have prepared clients and athletes for competitions.
I am the strength and conditioning coach for the BC LIONS FOOTBALL club and most notably and recently we won the highest level of competition in the CFL, the 2011 Grey Cup championship.
Personally I have competed on many levels in different sports, I have achieved the western Canadian title 99, Canadian title 2000 as a lightweight in natural bodybuilding (CNBF) and won a  bronze medal at the WNBF world championships in men’s pro -fitness 2000, and a silver medal at the FAME world championships as a welter weight. I also have a passion for fighting and that has led me to the experience of defeating 6 out of 6 men that I have fought in the ring, that is!

ARE YOU SPONSORED?

I am not currently sponsored but my eyes are open to the ideas of having a sponsor or investor who has the same vision as I do.

WHAT WAS IT THAT PROPELLED YOU INTO COMPETING?

Why not? With me, I have always had a burning desire to be the best even as a kid, I could never back down from any challenge! Competing is natural for me because I thrive on it! So I would say the challenge of competition is what draws me to it, and the task of preparing for any battle is my passion! I truly enjoy and believe that HARD WORK PAYS OFF!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN ASPIRING COMPETITOR?

What I would say to anybody aspiring to compete is this: if you have the competitive spirit inside of you, no man stands in your way! Don’t hesitate! Do what’s in your heart! Believe in yourself! And most importantly, BE PREPARED! Hire a qualified coach and NEVER QUIT! Last but not least, BE HUMBLE no-one does it alone!

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN COMPETITION?

I have had many memorable moments in the preparation and actual competitions, but one or two stands out. In 99, I competed with my wife Lonette and my brother Adam in the same competition,we all won that night! That positive experience with my family hooked me for a long time! Winning the Grey Cup with my team and my family by my side was an amazing feeling! WOW! We did it! And we did it together!

DESCRIBE THE FEELING YOU HAD WHEN YOU FIRST STEPPED ONTO A STAGE?

First BB show- yes a little nervous but excited to show everybody the tools I developed! I felt confident and ready for battle!

First fight- extremely nervous! My thought was “this is real, and someone is going to get hurt tonight” and I knew it could be me, so I’d better fight hard and stick to my coaches’ game plan!

WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING ROUTINE LIKE?

My training varies throughout the year depending on my goals, but I feel a periodized approach to training because it works great for success!
But one thing remains, I am always in a constant state of improvement! NEVER just maintaining!

WHAT TYPE OF DIET DO YOU FOLLOW?

Generally speaking I follow a nutritious diet all year round 90% of the time. I focus on good clean food and eat small frequent meals every 3 hours or so, I try not to restrict calories unless it’s absolutely necessary! I work hard to never get too far out of competition weight so when the time comes, it takes only small modifications. For the most part I believe a diet should be balanced in carbohydrates, protein, and essential fats. But I will say this: at times extreme results call for extreme methods! That’s something you learn to accept as an elite athlete.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BODY PARTS TO WORK ON?

It’s hard to pick my favorite body parts to train because I like doing exercises like (power cleans, snatches) linking body parts together focusing on movements, but I really enjoy training legs, back and shoulders.

WHAT IS YOUR WEAKEST PHYSICAL ATTRITBUTE?

Well, it’s hard to ask someone as competitive as me about revealing my weakest physical attribute because I believe that anything I’ve used to think is a weakness, I have turned into a strength, for example being only 5″7, some people would say being a shorter athlete is a weakness but I have made up ground with my quickness and agility.

WHAT IS YOUR STRONGEST PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTE?

I would have to say… POWER.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU EAT AFTER A COMPETITION OR MATCH?

The first thing I usually want to eat after any competition is usually pizza and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and salty chips of any kind.

THE ONE THING YOU HATE ABOUT COMPETING?

LOSING!  They say you learn more from losing but it’s still a hard pill to swallow at times. It just makes me think of ways I can work harder and smarter, to NOT let it happen again!

THE ONE THING YOU LOVE ABOUT COMPETING?

It sounds corny when people say “enjoy the journey” but it’s true! I enjoy the preparation, and the road to success, it’s so gratifying to know that you can overcome anything if you FOCUS (F)follow (O)one (C)course (U)until (S)successful.

HOW HAS THE SPORT ASSISTED YOU IN YOUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH?

What I do has assisted me enormously physically and mentally, it has taught me that where the mind of a man goes the body follows! So I use the highest thinking to achieve the best physical health.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE?

The future for me looks amazing! I have been blessed with some great opportunities! My focus is on my family, my athletes and clients! For all my upcoming events check me out on twitter @chrisboyko.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’D BE DOING IF YOU WERENT IN YOUR SPORT INDUSTRY?

I would be a chef or doing something where I get to work with kids.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHEAT FOOD?

Pizza, Doritos or anything salty.

IN A RING FIGHT MATCH WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD WIN IN THEIR PRIME, BRUCE LEE OR ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER?

Oh wow good question. The DRAGON vs CONAN? Conan was big and strong and had a killer instinct! But SPEED KILLS every time! I give that one to my man Bruce.

YOUR FAVORITE PERSONAL QUOTE?

TODAY I WILL WORK HARDER AND SMARTER THAN YESTERDAY.

How do you keep the team motivated?

My team is full of self motivated players, but the season is a long grind for some,
So the main thing is making sure the guys have not lost sight of the common goal we all have ….WINNING.

Have you ever found it hard to stay motivated? If so, what do you do to get yourself back on track?

I think everyone goes through a period of time where motivation can be low at something. To be honest I don’t know what I’d do with out my wife, she somehow brings me back to life every time! We meditate daily on the highest of    all positive words!

What is the hardest thing to see happen to the team?

The hardest thing is not always what happens on the field, its what our staff and players may have to persevere through as the season is happening. Families have lost loved ones and guys get seriously injured! That’s hard! But we keep moving forward!

How important do you think your relationship is with the team?

I feel my relationship is very important to the team because in order to have a successful team your athletes have to be well prepared to withstand the rigors of an entire football season! And that’s what my job is exactly! Training athletes to be bigger stronger faster men!

Do you have a favorite ritual that you do with the team?

Basically training is the ritual for me! But I get so pumped when the team does there pre-game ritual right before I lead the stretch, the ritual resembles a mosh pit! With paris in the middle and guys going wild! and then they do what is called “drop it off” followed by my words..”Roll out the backs” . Check  bclions.com. Its awesome!

What’s your favourite way to relax after a stressful day?

Def hit my man cave with my wife lonette and two daughters Kiana and Tayja and chill on the most comfortable couch in the world watching a movie.

What is the hardest part about your job? What is the best part about your job?

The hardest part about the job at times can be knowing what we are capable of and not being there yet! Fortunately we proved what we were capable of this 2011 season, we finished #1 champs. The most satisfying thing about my job is watching these guys overcome so many obstacles to end up on top! Its such an honor to be a member of the BC LIONS, an honor to hoist that GREY CUP in VICTORY!
